SOTA Ben Lomond

After leaving Armidale headed North on the New England Highway, turning off onto Ben Lomond road to the small town of Ben Lomond.

Notice the altitude on the sign, 1363 m. Even though Ben Lomond summit is only a few hundred m higher than the surrounding land, the overall height makes it around 1500 m and a 10 pointer.

Travelled along Inn Road until spotting an open gate with a road leading to the summit

The road crosses a private airport "runway", a flat grassy strip. A few gates to open and close

Got to a locked gate close to the summit.

Set off along the fence until getting close to the summit and within the activation zone. Set up the squid pole on the fence

Shack on the tarp nearby

Good views looking South.

Started on 20 m, hoping to catch Andrew VK1NAM/2 on Mt Gillamatong, VK2/ST-034. Heard Paul VK5PAS working him, but Andrew quite weak on 20 m. We tried 40 m, surprisingly signals S9, even though some distance apart. Went on to work 6 chasers on 40 m and 6 chasers on 20 m. The VK3s and VK5s on 20 m very strong. Worked Mike VK6MB with a low signal.

Packed up and headed off for lunch at Glen Innes.
