Lower Molonglo River Corridor Nature Reserve VKFF-0990

With a nice sunny Saturday afternoon decided to get out for a walk and get some exercise, plus toke the radio to do a WWFF park activation. I was originally going to do Woodstock Nature Reserve, however looking at the crowded car park decided to give it a miss and continued on past it to the end of Stockdill Drive in Holt, to a walking track down into Lower Molonglo River Corridor Nature Reserve VKFF-0990. Hardly any cars at the start of the walk. Sign for the walk.

Hopped through the walkers gap through the fence and on to the walking track going down to the Molonglo river. A faded sign for the park at the start of the walk.

Continued down the track to the river. Pleasant, if a bit windy.

When the track started to descend rapidly into the Molonglo river gorge, left it to find a suitable operating spot. Found an old fence in disrepair, probably left over from when the reserve was farmland. Used one of the fence posts to support the squid pole, tied off the legs of the 40 m dipole to a couple of bushes.

Looking back down the hill. The Molonglo River gorge can be seen on the left.

Operating spot. From Google Maps satellite view

Got on 40 m, running about 25 w from the FT-857D. First contact was with Gerard, VK2IO/p on 7.144 on SOTA sunmmit VK2/IL-015 Mount Kembla, also a park to park with VKFF-1329. He had a good 59 signal. Good to hear some NVIS short skip for a change on 40 m...

Found a clear spot on 7.160 and spotted myself. A good strong signal from Peter VK3PF who had heard me talking to Gerard and waited for me to appear nearby. Went on to work several stations with good signals. Many using the AX Prefix for Anzac Day.

Went to 20 m. Only one contact there, VK5MRD David who I heard calling CQ. Knew David well from 10 m.

Had 18 contacts. I had already qualified this park before for WWFF 44 contacts, but was good to get out and do it again, and the activation counts towards the boomerang award.

It got a bit cold and cloudy so packed up and headed home.
